The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Rudolph M. Schuller (ASN: 35316064), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 379th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 6 November 1944. On the night of 6 November 1944, while approaching the outer fortifications of Fort Jeanne D’Arc, France, leading his combat patrol, Sergeant Schuller was severely wounded by a burst of enemy machine-gun fire. Although bleeding profusely from his wounds and suffering intense pain, Sergeant Schuller picked up the sub-machine gun which had been jarred from his hands and fired a full clip of ammunition into the enemy position in front of him, silencing the machine gun. He continued to direct the fire and movement of his platoon despite his wounds until he collapsed from loss of blood. Technical Sergeant Schuller’s inspiring leadership, his heroic determination to close with the enemy and his supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 95th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
