Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 129 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class Leo Wells Satterfield (ASN: 33886424), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 385th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 15 February 1945. During an attack against Siegfried Line positions near Irrel, Germany, Private Satterfield boldly led his squad in a successful assault upon an enemy machinegun position which had been harassing his platoon. When fire from a pill box impeded the advance, he volunteered to go forward and reduce the position. He deliberately exposed himself to draw fire and pinpoint the enemy location, then advanced from the flank and reduced the pill box with grenade and rifle fire. Private First Class Satterfield was killed by artillery fire, but his heroism lives on as an inspiration to his comrades. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
