The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Samuel A. Rowland (ASN: 38534662), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 13 January 1944. On that date, Sergeant Rowland’s company occupied positions near Nothum, Luxembourg. When the company was subjected to heavy automatic weapons fire from concealed enemy positions, Sergeant Rowland went forward alone to make a reconnaissance. He discovered the enemy dug in behind a hedgerow, and while their attention was diverted by rifle fire from the company positions he fearlessly worked his way behind them. He boldly rushed the position, destroyed the automatic weapons, killed four of the enemy and took prisoner the remaining two. Sergeant Rowland through his fearless determination removed a serious threat from his company front. His achievements and his courageous duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
