Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 31 (July 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade Earl Francis Robinson (ASN: 6144210), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 8 June 1944. A composite group of paratroopers were completely surrounded by the enemy and had been under heavy enemy fire during an entire day. Numerous casualties had resulted and were housed in a nearby farm building. At the same time, the enemy was using flame throwers on a nearby house and adjacent haystack. The farm building caught fire and the wounded, most of whom were litter cases, were unable to help themselves. Technician Fourth Grade Robinson, practically unassisted and with complete disregard for his own safety, removed all the wounded men from the burning house and took them to a spot in the defense area where some protection was offered against the enemy fire. Technician Fourth Grade Robinson’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 82d Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
