The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Kimball Russ Richmond (ASN: 0-1286184), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Captain Richmond brilliantly led his men in a vicious attack upon strongly entrenched enemy forces. Although constantly exposed to heavy enemy fire, Captain Richmond fearlessly continued his advance, captured numerous prisoners, and was instrumental in the seizure of an important enemy town. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

While on a night reconnaissance mission seeking enemy gun positions, Lieutenant Richmond deployed his patrol along a line estimated to be facing these enemy positions and opened fire. His clever tactics disclosed, by the counter-fire of enemy automatic weapons, the exact location of enemy guns, and enabled Lieutenant Richmond to gain valuable and accurate information. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 31 (July 1, 1944)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Kimball Russ Richmond (ASN: 0-1286184), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, Company I, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. When the crafts on which his company was moving in, on the initial assault upon the coast of France, were sunk by enemy fire and mines, Captain Richmond swam to shore through a hail of machine gun bullets and artillery fire. Upon reaching the shore, he gathered together the remainder of his company and moved down the beach. Here he established contact with a group of men whose officers had become casualties. He quickly organized the men for an attack against an enemy strongpoint on the left flank. In the face of heavy direct enemy fire, he gallantly led his men in successful assault upon this enemy emplacement thereby removing an enemy installation that had been inflicting heavy casualties on this part of the beach. Without hesitation, Captain Richmond then pushed inland against the enemy. Completely disregarding his own safety, he led his men across open terrain, captured ***** and successfully defended it against superior forces until relieved. The personal bravery and determined leadership of Captain Richmond exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Lieutenant Richmond led a patrol against the enemy with such skill that he was instrumental in recovering five 105-mm. howitzers which had previously been lost to the enemy. His tactical ability and presence of mind were inspiring to his men and materially aided in the successful completion of their mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
