The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Robert Lee Presser (ASN: 39468010), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 27 December 1944, in Luxembourg. On the night of 27 December, Private Presser was a member of a nine-man patrol that made a daring crossing of the Suro River, Luxembourg, and infiltrated behind enemy lines. When one of the members was hit in the chest by enemy fire Private Presser carried him back to the river bank only to find that the assault boats had been destroyed. Without hesitation he plunged into the icy, sleet-whipped river, towing his wounded comrade, and battled his way under enemy fire to the friendly shore. The courage and supreme devotion to duty Private Presser displayed distinguishes him as an outstanding soldier. His heroic, unselfish actions exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
