Louis Lawton graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1893. He was cited for gallantry in both the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection, suffering wounds on both occasions, and earned the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Boxer Rebellion in China. He retired in 1903 as a U.S. Army Major due to his combat wounds.

First Lieutenant Lawton carried a message and guided reinforcements across a wide and fireswept space, during which he was thrice wounded.
