The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Kenneth Francis Peterson (ASN: 32569088), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. Sergeant Peterson, armed with a Bazooka, exhibited utter disregard for his own safety by constantly exposing himself to enemy fire while leading assaults on enemy emplacements. He, alone, charged and destroyed the emplaced enemy in at least two pillboxes. He continued in the advance of the assault in the face of intense enemy fire until he reached the top of a hill. From his exposed position on the hill he covered the advance of his company. The determination, personal bravery and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Peterson exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
