The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Jacob M. Peter (ASN: 36445496), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 385th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 8 March 1945. During an attack against the town of Landscheid, Germany, Sergeant Peter’s platoon was cut off and encircled by the enemy. Defending the left flank of the position with eleven men he successfully repelled repeated enemy counterattacks for seven hours, inspiring and encouraging his men by his bold, fearless leadership. Disregarding his own safety he continually exposed himself to enemy fire, and on one occasion he braved withering fire to drag a wounded comrade to safety. Sergeant Peter was killed while driving off an enemy tank with rifle and grenade fire. Staff Sergeant Peter’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 76th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
