The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Alfred B. Padilla (ASN: 38001132), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 11 January 1945. On that date, Sergeant Padilla was advancing with his machine-gun platoon, supporting an infantry company in an attack on Doncols, Luxembourg. When an enemy machine-gun position held up the advance, this soldier boldly went forward to draw their fire and locate the position. He returned to his squad and then, covered by their fire, advanced alone on the enemy position. He killed one German and wounded another with a hand grenade and took prisoner the remaining two. Sergeant Padilla’s bold, fearless action made possible the advance of the company. His heroic determination and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
