The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Thomas Everett Oxford (ASN: 38671965), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 17 March 1945. On that date, Sergeant Oxford’s company was moving toward an important road junction near Buprich Huttersdorf, Germany, when they encountered an enemy tank. The tank immediately opened fire endangering the foot troops. Sergeant Oxford, without hesitation, made his way to the tank, audaciously sprang onto the rear turret and began beating upon it, shouting to the crew to surrender. The crew members, believing themselves to be surrounded, crawled from the tank and surrendered to Sergeant Oxford. Sergeant Oxford’s bold action saved many of his comrades lives. The courage and heroic devotion he displayed exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
