The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Milton J. Munch (ASN: 0-1999955), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 25 January 1945. On that date, when a platoon of the infantry company commanded by Lieutenant Munch was crossing a field in an attack near Lausdorn, Luxembourg, an intense concentration of fire forced the men to the ground where they were at the mercy of the enemy. Realizing that the men must advance, Lieutenant Munch, with no thought of his own safety dashed onto the fire-swept open field, inspiring the troops by his bold, fearless example. He went from man to man, encouraging them to go forward, and remained in the open until he had accomplished his mission. Second Lieutenant Munch’s heroic action marks him as an outstanding leader. His fearlessness and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
