The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fourth Grade Charles E. Mueller (ASN: 36200098), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 634th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion (Separate), THIRD U.S. Army, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 9 and 10 March 1945. During action on 9 and 10 March 1945, near Erpel, Germany, Technician Fourth Grade Mueller fearlessly exposed himself to intense enemy artillery fire and air attack to aid and evacuate casualties. When an ammunition truck was hit by an enemy artillery shell he rushed to the blazing vehicle and with utter disregard for his own safety, in the face of the flames and exploding ammunition, carried the wounded driver to safety and administered first aid. He continued his heroic efforts until he was seriously wounded during an air attack the following day. Technician Fourth Grade Mueller’s gallant actions and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
