The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Samuel Alfred Morgan (ASN: 34199158), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 169th Field Artillery Battalion, 43d Infantry Regiment, in action against enemy forces at Baanga Island, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 15 August 1943. Knowing that the hazardous mission involved almost certain casualties, Private Morgan volunteered as a rifleman in a small party sent to rescue infantrymen who had been ambushed on the East coast of Baanga and were cut off from escape. While the officer in charge was searching ashore, Private Morgan helped rescue wounded men and attempted to silence the enemy’s 37-mm., sniper, and machine gun fire which had opened up as soon as their small boat had landed. While returning hostile fire, he was severely wounded in the thigh and hand. The outstanding courage and coolness he displayed were prime factors in the accomplishment of a dangerous mission. Private Morgan’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
