The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal [then Private First Class] Raymond Henry Milanowski (ASN: 36205341), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 21 August 1944. On that date, near Etampes, France, a friendly anti-tank gun was subjected to a devastating concentration of enemy mortar fire, severely wounding the gun sergeant. Corporal Milanowski, with utter disregard for his own safety, ran to the position under the hail of enemy mortar shells and moved his wounded comrade from the immediate area. Although still under fire from the German mortars he coolly and courageously administered first aid to the wounded sergeant and remained at his side until he was evacuated. Corporal Milanowski’s heroic, unselfish actions and unflinching devotion to duty are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces.
