The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class George Richard Meyer (ASN: 37573097), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 8 November 1944. On that date, near Moyenvic, France, an attacking infantry platoon was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Private Meyer, an automatic rifleman, on his own initiative moved forward to the left flank of the enemy force and despite heavy fire succeeded in gaining an advantageous position, Then, boldly advancing with marching fire, he engaged the enemy in a fierce fire fight, killed eight of the defenders, wounded four, destroyed two machine guns and forced the remainder of the group to flee. His heroic action permitted the platoon to advance and seize the objective. Private First Class Meyer’s determination and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
