The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Myron Albert Mears (ASN: 0-1055386), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 417th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 13 February 1945. On that date, during action against the Siegfried Line fortifications near Echternachbruch, Germany, Lieutenant Mears led assault squads in daring action against three strongly-defended emplacements, capturing them and fifteen of the enemy. On 15 February he led his platoon through withering machine gun fire against other emplacements, inspiring his men by his bold, fearless leadership. He single-handedly assaulted one of the pillboxes, armed only with a jammed carbine and a hand grenade and forced the surrender of its nine defenders. The heroic actions of this gallant officer mark him as an outstanding leader. Second Lieutenant Mears’ determination and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 76th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
