The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Harold R. McQuay (ASN: 35632671), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 23 November 1944, in Germany. On that date, during action near Butzdorf, Germany, when the platoon of which Private McQuay was a member became separated from the company, he voluntarily braved intense enemy fire to make contact with an adjacent platoon. As he advanced he noticed an enemy machine-gun directing fire against another platoon. With complete disregard for his own safety he boldly assaulted the gun and killed the crew with point blank rifle fire, continued on until he reached the lead squad of the platoon that was his objective and lead it to a position from which it could protect the exposed flank of his platoon. Private First Class McQuay’s conspicuous heroism, courageous determination and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
