The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) John H. Mason (ASN: 0-345436), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 8 August 1944, between **** and ****, France, Major Mason organized and personally directed under enemy fire a number of successful attacks composing infantry, artillery, air and supporting tanks. Major Mason’s action resulted in fighting eight separate skirmishes completed in eight hours and an advance of some twenty miles from **** to ****. His disregard for personal danger, his aggressive leadership and coolness under fire was an inspiration to his command and in keeping with the highest traditions of the military spirit.
