The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) John H. Mason (ASN: 0-345436), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 28 October 1944, in the vicinity of Maizieres, France. On that date, Colonel Mason organized and led an attack against a determined enemy force that had been resisting for several days. At the height of the attack, during the heaviest of mortar and artillery barrages, Colonel Mason, completely disregarding his own safety, continually roamed the front lines encouraging and assisting his troops; inspiring them by his personal bravery and conspicuous leadership. On one occasion he personally assisted a mortar crew by preparing 60-mm. rounds for firing. His heroism, intrepid leadership, and loyal devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
