The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Private] Maurice L. Martin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Office of Strategic Services, in action against enemy forces in enemy-occupied France, from 11 April 1944 to 10 September 1944. Second Lieutenant Martin was parachuted into France in civilian clothing, as a radio operation and assistant to his partner in the organization of French resistance forces. Because of his thorough knowledge of the district and the residents thereof, he was able to establish contacts for his partner and himself. His success in his mission made the task of his partner, in organizing resistance forces, much simpler. Second Lieutenant Martin then took up his functions as wireless operator for the circuit. He set up his equipment and transmitted operational messages as scheduled, despite the vigilance of the enemy and the danger of capture by them. He also led numerous successful sabotage sorties against enemy objectives. Second Lieutenant Martin’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
