Headquarters, 80th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 136 (1945)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) James Sawyer Luckett (ASN: 0-18209), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States while Commanding the 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, on 2 April 1945 in Germany. On that date, during the fluid stages of the fighting near Kassel, Germany, Colonel Luckett was returning to his Command Post over roads not entirely cleared of enemy troops when his vehicle was halted by a ten-man enemy patrol. Jumping from his vehicle, Colonel Luckett rushed the enemy demanding that they surrender. Taking advantage of the enemy’s surprise at his action he opened fire with his carbine and effectively engaged them in a fire fight despite the rifle and rocket fire directed at him. After a fierce exchange of fire for approximately five minutes the enemy broke and ran leaving two dead and one wounded behind. The bravery, aggressiveness, and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Luckett were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
