The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) James Sawyer Luckett (ASN: 0-18209), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 11 and 12 June 1944. The heroic, courageous leadership Colonel Luckett displayed while Commanding the 12th Infantry Regiment in action near Monte-Bourge, France, on 11 and 12 June 1944, distinguishes him as an outstanding officer. He repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to direct the actions of his troops, inspiring them by his fearless personal example. Colonel Luckett’s conspicuous heroism and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
