The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Vernie A. Lindsay (ASN: 37155435), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 9 December 1944, in Germany. On that date, during an attack against a strongly held enemy fortification near Dillingen, Germany, Sergeant Lindsay’s platoon leader was wounded. The Sergeant immediately assumed command and fearlessly led the platoon through intense fire to within forty yards of the objective. Then, placing his men in strategic positions, he assaulted the pillbox alone, armed with as many hand grenades as he could carry. He threw fifteen grenades into the pillbox, killing many of the enemy and forcing the remainder to surrender. The enemy counter-attacked immediately, but the intrepid Sergeant quickly organized his men and repelled the attack. Sergeant Lindsay’s conspicuous heroism and fearless, courageous leadership exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
