Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 137 (June 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Samuel Leo (ASN: 0-1996455), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 16 December 1944. On that date, while advancing on the town of Longsdorf, Luxembourg, Lieutenant Leo’s platoon was attacked by a group of Germans and subjected to heavy rifle and machine gun fire. Accompanied by a squad of men from his platoon, he fearlessly charged the enemy position; silenced two machine gun nests with grenades, killed five German soldiers with rifle fire and although wounded, pressed forward against the retreating Germans, killing five more and forcing the remainder to surrender. Second Lieutenant Leo’s heroic leadership and fierce aggressiveness exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
