The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Oscar Marvin Langenkamp (ASN: 35551554), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 3 April 1945. On that date, during an attack on Kassel, Germany, the advance of Sergeant Langenkamp’s squad was blocked by withering enemy fire emanating from a large building. He fearlessly led his men into the structure, killing two and capturing ten enemy soldiers defending the first floor. Their grenades expended, Sergeant Langenkamp crossed the street twice in full view of the enemy to obtain gasoline, set fire to the building, and skillfully placed his squad near the exits where they killed thirty enemy soldiers and captured thirty as they attempted to escape. Sergeant Langenkamp’s heroic leadership and aggressive actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
