The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clarence Lackner (ASN: RA-36294956/37294956), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Mosles, Normandy, France, on 7 June 1944. During the confusion of battle, a supporting tank mistakenly opened fire upon one of the company’s platoons. Sergeant Lackner, in the face of withering enemy fire, voluntarily advanced to the tank and notified the crew of its grave error. His exemplary action undoubtedly saved many of his comrades’ lives and earned him the praise of all who witnessed his deed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 44 (July 26, 1950)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Clarence Lackner (ASN: RA-36294956/37294956), United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with Company F, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action in Korea on 22 July 1950. While Company F, 35th Infantry Regiment, occupied a position near Mun-Gyong, a superior number of enemy forces attacked the right flank of the Second Platoon, making the company’s position untenable and forcing its withdrawal. Rallying his comrades, Sergeant Lackner led his platoon in a successful counterattack, regaining the high ground and consolidated the position while under heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. When his company was forced to withdraw a second time, Sergeant Lackner remained in position and covered the withdrawal by delivering effective and deadly counter fire until every member of the company had withdrawn. The aggressiveness, undaunted courage, and outstanding leadership by Sergeant Lackner was an inspiration to his comrades and reflects great credit on himself and the military service.

Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 35 (February 28, 1945)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Clarence Lackner (ASN: RA-36294956/37294956), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 26 November 1944. When his company was halted by superior enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner moved through intense hostile fire and located two friendly tanks. From an exposed position atop one of the tanks, he guided them toward the hostile positions and directed devastating fire upon the emplacement. As the tanks moved forward, Technical Sergeant Lackner, armed with a submachine gun, personally killed nine Germans attempting a bold maneuver. Observing a wounded soldier in direct line of hostile automatic rifle fire, Technical Sergeant Lackner dismounted from the tank, moved through the withering fire and evacuated the wounded man to safety. Technical Sergeant Lackner’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
