The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Arthur C. Johnston (ASN: 20311864), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 5 November 1944, near Kommerscheidt, Germany. During an enemy tank-infantry attack, friendly aircraft, flying in close support of ground troops, began bombing the area in which Sergeant Johnston’s squad was dug in. Disregarding the hail of bombs, artillery, tank and machine gun fire, he ran across an open field and emplaced signal identification panels, marking the front lines for the Air Corps. Shortly afterwards, two German tanks broke through and advanced on his positions. Shouting instructions to a mortar crew, he disabled one of the tanks with a bazooka, while the mortar fire repulsed the other. Staff Sergeant Johnston’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
