The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Glenn N. Johnson (ASN: 37538944), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 15 March 1945. On that date, during an attack on Lorscheid, Germany, Sergeant Johnson’s platoon was pinned down by an enemy machine gun nest in the nearby woods. With fearless courage he crawled towards the hostile position, cut his way through a heavy mesh fence, and in the face of direct, murderous enemy fire charged the enemy emplacement. Diving into a shell hole he tossed two grenades at the gun, killing two of the crew, and then killed the third enemy machine gunner as he attempted to escape. Sergeant Johnson’s heroic actions and intrepid gallantry are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service.
