The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Alvin Adolph Hyman (ASN: 33355357), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 24 February 1945, in Germany. When the attacking echelon of his battalion was pinned down by intense hostile machine gun, rifle, and machine pistol fire from enemy troops in a fire trench, Technical Sergeant Hyman alone charged the hostile position. Single-handedly assaulting the pillbox with hand grenades, he forced the enemy to come out and surrender. By his superb personal courage and aggressive fighting spirit, Technical Sergeant Hyman killed five enemy soldiers, captured thirty, eliminated a hostile strongpoint, and enabled his battalion to continue its attack. Technical Sergeant Hyman’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 8th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
