The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Norman Russell Hughes (ASN: 0-1821722), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 2d Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 20 February 1945. On that date, Lieutenant Hughes led his platoon in an attack against the town of Halsdorf, Germany, inspiring his men by his bold, fearless leadership. Alone, he boldly charged an enemy strong point, silenced the fire, killed four and captured a number of the defenders. When he encountered a hostile self-propelled gun he fearlessly attacked it although armed only with a carbine. He killed the commander and forced the vehicle to withdraw. First Lieutenant Hughes’ conspicuous heroism distinguished him as an outstanding leader. His determination and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
