The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Thomas William Hoban, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of El Bathan, Tunisia, on 6 December 1942. Captain Hoban distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism while conducting the defense of a position against constant attack by enemy ground troops supported by artillery and machine gun fire, as well as serial bombardment and strafing. He exposed himself without regard for his own safety and personally led three counter-attacks to recover lost ground. Captain Hoban’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
