Headquarters, NINTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 290 (June 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] James L. Hansen, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 405th Infantry Regiment, 102d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 23 February 1945, in Germany. After crossing the Roar River, Lieutenant Hansen reorganized scattered elements of his platoon and led them towards their objective. When their advance was threatened by concealed enemy fire he moved courageously over fire swept terrain to direct fire on harassing emplacements. After killing one gunner, he crawled forward and dispatched three more and then led his platoon forward in another attack. Through his courage and exemplary leadership, Lieutenant Hansen was largely responsible for the success of his platoon in reaching its objective. Technical Sergeant Hansen’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 102d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
