The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank Joseph Hagney (ASN: 0-1061711), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 1 April 1945, in Germany. On that date, during fierce action near Altenstadt, Germany, Lieutenant Hagney disregarded his painful wounds and courageously led his platoon through intense hostile frontal and flanking fire. Inspiring his men by his heroic, indomitable leadership he pressed forward against the enemy and although wounded seriously twice more, continued his gallant, aggressive actions. Second Lieutenant Hagney’s tenacious courage and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 71st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
