The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Clifford Thorne Hackard (ASN: 0-1296023), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while Commanding an Infantry Company of the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 November 1944, in Germany. During a vicious enemy counterattack spearheaded by three Tiger tanks, Captain Hackard awaited the approach of the tanks and when one came within fifty yards of his observation post, he fired his only rocket, knocking the tank out of action. As the crew attempted to escape, Captain Hackard killed or wounded six Germans with accurate rifle fire. Later, Captain Hackard was checking defensive positions of his men when a machine gun opened up. Disregarding intense artillery and machine gun fire, and armed only with a rifle, he advanced toward the weapon, leaped into the emplacement and killed three members of the crew. His outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
