The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Staff Sergeant Fred Grossi (ASN: 33403483), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 376th Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 16 January 1945. On the night of 16 January 1945, when the enemy attacked his Command Post near Nennig, Germany, Sergeant Grossi, on duty as Command Post Guard dauntlessly faced the overwhelming odds and, firing a light machine gun from the hip, succeeded in slowing the furious advance. When his weapon jammed, he picked up an M-1 rifle and although subjected to withering machine gun, rifle, automatic weapons and rocket fire, continued his gallant, inspired defense, killing nine enemy soldiers and five officers, and repulsing the attack Staff Sergeant Grossi’s unflinching courage and heroic devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 94th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
