The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) John David Frederick (ASN: 0-12453), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 23 February 1945, at Manila, Philippine Islands. Colonel Frederick, as Regimental Commander, 129th Infantry Regiment, led his regiment in the assault and seizure of Fort Santiago as well as a section of the Walled City of Manila. This difficult and hazardous maneuver involved a daylight crossing of the Pasig River, at a point where it was 375 feet wide, and a direct assault upon a strongly fortified bastion under constant enemy observation and extremely heavy fire from numerous automatic weapons. Colonel Frederick led his regiment with such outstanding skill that they not only seized their initial objective but continued their advance 700 yards into the Walled City itself. In the preparation and execution of this attack, Colonel Frederick displayed an exceptional degree of tactical skill, personal courage, and gallant leadership. Colonel Frederick’s’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
