The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Elmer Lloyd Forbuss (ASN: 39727353), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 14 January 1945, in Belgium. On that date, Company B was engaged against German forces when an extremely heavy volume of enemy fire wounded a machine gunner and forced him to abandon his weapon. Sergeant Forbuss crawled through a terrific hail of fire to recover the gun. Ignoring the intense enemy activity, he operated the weapon against the Germans and neutralized several of their positions. After expending his machine gun ammunition, he killed two of the foe with his rifle. The courage and ability of Sergeant Forbuss, which permitted his company to advance exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
