The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James F. Flowers, Jr. (ASN: 0-1017690), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company C, 712th Tank Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 6 July 1944, near ****, France, learning that an infantry battalion was cut off by enemy forces, Lieutenant Flowers voluntarily loaded food and ammunition on the three medium tanks of his platoon and at considerable risk due to the ammunition on the tank decks, attempted to break through to the isolated unit. Enemy tanks were known to be in the area and because of stubborn resistance and poor visibility, two successive attempts failed. Nevertheless, a third attempt to reach the isolated troops succeeded on 7 July 1944. This resulted in relief to the battalion and evacuation of its wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
