Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 31 (July 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Lawrence J. Fitzsimmons (ASN: 6719936), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944. First Sergeant Fitzsimmons landed with the assault wave of troops. He exposed himself to the direct enemy fire when he forcefully opened a defective landing ramp. He then led his men to the protection of a small shale shelf. On at least three occasions, with complete disregard for his own safety, he dashed back into the surf to aid wounded and struggling men to reach the shore. He continually moved up and down the beach under the heavy enemy fire to locate the platoons of his company in its reorganization. The courage and leadership in battle displayed by First Sergeant Fitzsimmons exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
