The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Edward C. Federmann (ASN: 35458790), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with the Medical Detachment, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Tunisia, on ** March 1943. On that date Lieutenant Dennison, of Company *, *** Infantry Regiment, was wounded in a mine field about six miles Southeast of *****. Private Federmann, without personal regard for his own safety, crawled through the mine field while under constant machine gun fire and rendered first aid to the lieutenant. He personally saw that the officer was evacuated and continued to assist the wounded at the front lines. On 29 March 1943, Private Federmann was killed in action trying to reach a number of wounded men who were pinned down by enemy machine gun and mortar fire. Private Federmann’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
