War Department, General Orders No. 34 (March 25, 1947)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private] Jack L. Evans, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 July 1944, near Beau Caudrey, France. Although severely wounded, Technician Fifth Grade Evans refused evacuation to remain in defense of his company’s hard-pressed position. Under enemy fire, and in complete disregard for his own safety, he crawled between the lines to bring one of his wounded comrades to safety. When a heavy German attack forced his company to withdraw to the next hedgerow, he remained in his forward position and continued to fire on the advancing enemy, even though he was week from exertion and loss of blood. Feigning death, he succeeded in evading capture and after dark crawled to the protection of his company’s new position. The courage, determination, and devotion to duty displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Evans exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
