The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clyde W. Ehrhardt (ASN: 0-539852), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 417th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 and 11 March 1945, in the vicinity of Mertesdorf, Germany. During an attack on a vital, heavily defended hill Lieutenant Ehrhardt exhibited heroic leadership in taking the objective and inspiring his outnumbered men in a gallant defense against three tank-led enemy counterattacks. The following day, although wounded, he continued to direct his men in resisting powerful enemy attempts to dislodge them. When a second serious wound forced him to be evacuated he courageously insisted on furnishing his battalion commander with clear, detailed information on the disposition and tactics of the enemy. First Lieutenant Ehrhardt’s intrepid leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 76th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
