The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Armor) Calvin E. Eells (ASN: 0-522552), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 66th Armored Regiment, 2d Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 October 1944, in Germany. While leading his tanks into position to form a strong roadblock, Second Lieutenant Eells’ tank received three direct hits from an enemy tank. He escaped from the flaming tank and, despite painful wounds and burns and while subjected to intense fire, directed two remaining tanks to covered positions. He re-entered the burning tank, extricated his wounded gunner, and carried him to an abandoned house. After an unsuccessful attempt to evacuate the other crew members, he collapsed from exhaustion and directed litter bearers to carry him to an infantry battalion command post where he made a complete report of the enemy situation. Second Lieutenant Eells’ intrepid leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 2d Armored Division, and the United States Army.
