The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Jessie V. Davis (ASN: 34192912), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 86th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 6th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in France, on 30 November 1944. On that date, near Haut-Bas, France, Technician Fifth Grade Davis discovered the approach of a strong enemy patrol, ordered the three men assisting him in the establishment of an outpost to withdraw and warn their unit, and fearlessly faced the attacking enemy alone. He fought ferociously with sub-machine gun and grenades and when his ammunition was expended he gallantly battled the enemy with his empty weapon until killed by the numerically superior forces. Through his courageous, self-sacrificing stand, the enemy patrol was forced to withdraw with heavy losses and his troops were warned of an impending attack. Technician Fifth Grade Davis’ heroic actions and supreme devotion to duty will live on as an inspiration to his comrades.
