The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Fourth Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fifth Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Derrill McCullough Daniel (ASN: 0-235096), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Schevenhutte, Germany, 19 November 1944. When a numerically superior enemy force supported by intense artillery and mortar fire overran elements of his battalion, Colonel Daniel unhesitatingly proceeded to the besieged forces and gallantly led a successful counterattack upon the foe. Colonel Daniel’s tactical skill and aggressive actions repulsed the Germans and guarded the flanks of adjacent friendly units. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
