The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Derrill McCullough Daniel (ASN: 0-235096), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Djebel Halfa, Tunisia, 28 January 1943. As Battalion Executive Officer of the 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Major Daniel went forward with Company F, 26th Infantry, to occupy Djebel Halfa, Tunisia, a position two miles in advance of the allied front lines. Under cover of darkness and in spite of enemy patrols, the force moved up and occupied its objective according to plan. The thorough work of Major Daniel in supervising the hazardous mission of outposting Djebel Halfa with Company F, 26th Infantry, in the face of the enemy no doubt allowed the C.T. 26 to break up a strong enemy attack on Tefifila Pass the following morning. His coolness under heavy danger and his gallantry in action were an inspiration to the men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
