The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant [then Private] James F. Cousineau (ASN: 12004075), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 23 January 1945. On that date, Technical Sergeant Cousineau’s platoon attacked enemy positions near Nennig, Germany. When the advance was halted by close range machine-gun and rifle fire, Sergeant Cousineau boldly rushed the machine-gun position, destroyed the gun and the crew with hand grenades and with accurate rifle fire killed an estimated eleven Germans. That night he and another soldier voluntarily went forward into enemy territory to evacuate wounded comrades and skillfully fought their way back when cut off by an enemy patrol. Technical Sergeant Cousineau’s skill and daring and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 94th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
