Headquarters, THIRD U.S. Army, General Orders No. 131 (June 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John Thomas Clements (ASN: 13186396), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 23 January 1945. On the night of 23 January, in the town of Binsfield, Luxembourg, when his company was counterattacked by Germany infantry supported by tanks and an 88-mm. gun, Private Clements left the cover of a building and knocked out the enemy gun with bazooka fire. He continued the fight until all the defenders but himself and a comrade were killed or wounded, then armed only with a pistol, he boldly advanced against a German machine gun nest. Private First Class Clements was killed by enemy fire as he neared the position, but his heroic devotion to duty, in keeping with the highest traditions of the service, lives on as an inspiration to his comrades.
