The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Everett Mitchell Callaway (ASN: 34996752), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Luxembourg, on 11 January 1945. On that date, during action near Sonlez, Luxembourg, Private Callaway courageously manned his machine-gun in the face of intense enemy fire, covering two men who attempted to rescue a casualty. During this action he killed six of the enemy and knocked out two machine-guns. He was severely wounded when he went to the aid of the rescuers, but he returned to his gun and by effective fire succeeded in neutralizing much of the enemy resistance before he was forced to obtain treatment for his wound. Private Callaway’s determination and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
