The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Edward C. Burnshaw (ASN: 33472463), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Cannon Company, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 19 February 1945. During an attack on Oberleuken, Germany, Private First Class Burnshaw was seriously wounded by an exploding enemy mine. Although suffering intense pain and weakened by additional wounds, he maintained artillery fire on the enemy positions. He lay in his exposed position for eleven hours and courageously refused attempts to evacuate him on the grounds that it would endanger the lives of his rescuers. Private First Class Burnshaw’s heroic, unselfish actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 94th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
